Little Buddha
[whoooooa!]
"Set in different times", these "two stories" would have "disciples" pleading "'17 minutes longer'" ("for some reason"); "one might say", "out of his normal" "physical features" ("(of all places)"), "definitely not a word" could be spoken against this "absolutely perfect" "all out winner" - but you never know what "one might say."
This is a great movie. It is beautifully set with wonderful color play. The movie follows two stories that parallel each other but are set in different times. Keanu goes out of his normal roles to play the young prince who becomes Buddha, and he pulls it off phenomenally, despite having to put on an Indian accent. This is an all out winner.
Upon first viewing, one might say, "Where is Keanu?" His performance as Siddhartha is so chameleonic (definitely not a word) he is unrecognizable. However, his performance still is almost too predictably great. Delicate balance of the Siddhartha story with a search for the reincarnation of a monk. Beautifully cinematography and a lovely, lovely story. Chris Isaak, too.
Two stories are told here: a prominent Lama has died, and his former disciples are searching for his reincarnation in Seattle (of all places); as we watch the search unfold we are also shown the story of Siddhartha, who finds enlightenment and becomes Buddha. Keanu, for some reason, is absolutely perfect as both the enlightened and unenlightened Siddhartha; his physical features, his accent, and his overall demeanor are shining, shot in warm golden tones by Bertolucci. The story of the Buddhist monks, thousands of years later, searching for one of their own, is equally moving.
